The digital collectibles world has seen few projects capture NFT enthusiasts’ imagination in the way Azuki has done.

Yet when Azuki Elementals dropped in June 2023, it proved that an already buzzing ecosystem could be expanded even further.

This guide digs into everything about Azuki Elementals, from how they came to be and their artistic vision to their market impact and place in the broader Azuki universe.

      Key Takeaways

      • Azuki Elementals is a 20,000-piece Ethereum-based NFT collection launched in June 2023 that expands the Azuki universe with characters themed around four elements: Earth, Fire, Lightning, and Water.
      • Created by Chiru Labs, the collection sold out in just 15 minutes during a presale exclusively for existing Azuki and Beanz holders, with no NFTs available for the planned public sale.
      • Despite initial excitement and the rapid sellout, market performance has been mixed and the floor price has dropped significantly, raising concerns about dilution.
      • Ownership grants access to The Garden (Azuki’s community space), exclusive merchandise drops, and potential interactions with the $ANIME token and the upcoming Azuki Trading Card Game.
      • Azuki’s roadmap includes ambitious expansions through AnimeChain (a Layer 3 blockchain), integrations with Anime.com, an anime anthology series, and physical-digital collectible crossovers, potentially enhancing Elementals’ utility and value.

      Azuki Elementals - NFT Traits

      What are Azuki Elementals?

Azuki Elementals consists of 20,000 digital collectibles (NFTs) expanding the Azuki universe. Each represents a unique character, drawing inspiration from four classical elements: Earth, Fire, Lightning, and Water.

These digital collectibles live on the Ethereum blockchain, where they can be bought, sold, and owned.

The Elementals collection marks the third major release in the Azuki ecosystem, following the original Azuki collection (10,000 NFTs) and the companion Beanz collection.

As one of the most notable Web3 NFT collections, every Elemental character portrays signature anime-inspired art styling, with their elemental themes setting them apart from the original Azuki.

When and how were Azuki Elementals created?

The Azuki team unveiled Elementals on June 23, 2023 during their hyped Follow the Rabbit event in Las Vegas. The reveal spread excitement throughout the NFT community, representing the first major expansion of Azuki characters since the Beanz collection.

Four days later, on June 27, 2023, minting began, with the creators setting up a tiered release to prioritize existing community members:

      1. First access: Original Azuki NFT holders
      2. Second access: Beanz NFT holders
      3. Planned public sale (which never actually happened!)

Minting worked as a Dutch auction, requiring a 2 ETH deposit to participate. Participants would receive the difference back if the final auction price landed below the deposit amount.

What shocked everyone was how quickly they sold out – just 15 minutes into the presale! While this lightning-fast sellout generated around $38 million USD, it meant the planned public sale never materialized, with all 20,000 NFTs being snatched up by existing Azuki and Beanz holders.

      Who created Azuki Elementals?

Chiru Labs, the team behind the original Azuki project, created Azuki Elementals.

While specific artists and developers maintain some anonymity, the project represents Chiru Labs’ ongoing vision to build what they call “Anime 2.0”, a decentralized anime brand owned by the community.

The team continues to blend expertise in art, blockchain tech, and community building to grow the Azuki universe. It’s an approach that has integrated high-quality anime-inspired artwork with blockchain technology, creating collectibles that appeal visually and have potential functional value.

      What makes Azuki Elementals unique?

The Elementals collection retains the anime-inspired aesthetic that helped the original Azukis gain recognition, while adding elemental themes, too:

      • Lightning domain: Characters with electric and storm-related traits
      • Earth domain: Characters with nature and earth-related features
      • Water domain: Characters with aquatic and fluid themes
      • Fire domain: Characters with flame and heat attributes

As well as these elemental domains, the collection includes different character subtypes:

      • Classic humanoid characters
      • Kid versions (younger characters)
      • Animal versions (including frogs, red pandas, sloths, and cats)

Each Elemental NFT features a combination of traits, some rarer than others. These traits cover background elements, clothing, accessories, and special features from their elemental domain.

NFT marketplaces and analytics platforms rank each Elemental based on the statistical scarcity of these traits. It’s these rarity metrics that often drive the market value of individual NFTs within the collection.

      Why were Azuki Elementals created?

The creation of Azuki Elementals serves a number of purposes:

      • Ecosystem expansion

The main goal was to expand the Azuki universe with fresh characters and themes. By bringing in elemental concepts, the creators add depth to the lore and narrative possibilities within their digital world, known as The Garden or Hilumia.

      • Community engagement

Azuki Elementals was designed to reward loyal community members, too.

The project’s focus on NFT community building gave priority access to current Azuki and Beanz holders as a thank you for their support while growing the community further.

      • Financial sustainability

With roughly $38 million generated from the mint, Azuki Elementals provided serious funding for Chiru Labs to keep developing the broader Azuki ecosystem, including their ambitious “Anime 2.0” vision, which spans animation, gaming, and physical merchandise.

      Where do Azuki Elementals exist?

Azuki Elementals essentially exist as digital tokens on the Ethereum blockchain.

You can view, trade, and transfer them through various NFT marketplaces like OpenSea, where it’s possible to browse the entire collection and check out individual traits.

The official Azuki website features a dedicated gallery section, too, where you can view and filter Elementals by element type. This gallery also shows information about “gachapon earnings” for Elemental Beanz, hinting at possible future integration with other aspects of the Azuki ecosystem.

Beyond their blockchain existence, Azuki Elementals regularly get discussed and celebrated across various community spaces:

      • The official Azuki Discord server, where collectors share their NFTs, discuss trades, and join community events
      • The official Twitter account (@Azuki), announcing updates and engaging with fans
      • Various NFT collector forums and social media groups dedicated to Azuki collectibles

      How were Azuki Elementals received?

The initial market performance of Azuki Elementals was pretty mixed.

Despite selling out during the mint in minutes, the floor price (lowest available price) of Elementals quickly dropped below the 2 ETH mint price on the secondary market. Similar to when OpenSea’s airdrop KYC sparked controversy, the community had mixed reactions to the project’s launch decisions.

As of early April 2025, the floor price sits at around 0.24 ETH, showing a massive decrease from the initial mint price, too.

The launch also affected the broader Azuki ecosystem, with the original Azuki and Beanz collections seeing price drops following the release of Elementals.

      Azuki Elementals - Anime.com

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the community response to Azuki Elementals has been split down the middle:

      On the good side:

      • Excitement about growing the Azuki universe
      • Appreciation for the elemental theme and new character variations
      • Enthusiasm from collectors who scored during the presale

      …but on the other side:

      • Many collectors felt the Elementals artwork looked too much like the original Azuki collection, raising concerns about a lack of innovation.
      • Some users hit technical issues during minting, especially with the tight time windows for presale access.
      • Adding 20,000 new NFTs to the ecosystem (on top of the original 10,000 Azuki NFTs) sparked fears about potential value dilution.
      • At launch, nobody really knew the specific benefits of owning an Azuki Elemental, creating uncertainty throughout the community.

In response, the Azuki team has acknowledged the feedback and mentioned plans to address these issues, including potential updates to the Elementals artwork and promises to prioritize original Azuki holders in future rewards and experiences.

What benefits do Azuki Elementals provide?

Holding Azuki Elementals grants certain benefits and exclusive access to a number of features in the Azuki ecosystem.

      Access to The Garden

Owning an Azuki Elemental gets you into The Garden, the exclusive community space within the Azuki ecosystem. This membership comes with various perks, including:

      • Access to exclusive streetwear collaborations
      • Priority for future NFT drops, such as the Azuki Alpha Starter Decks for the TCG
      • Invitations to live events and experiences
      • Participation in the Azuki metaverse, Hilumia

      Elemental Chips

Holders of Azuki Elementals received an airdrop of a Soulbound Token (SBT) called an Elemental Chip commemorating the Follow the Rabbit event.

These digital tokens prove participation and might unlock future benefits within the ecosystem.

      Collector Status program

The Azuki team implemented a Collector Status program rewarding holders for loyalty.

This program potentially impacts future drops and experiences within the ecosystem, with longer-term holders getting enhanced benefits.

What’s next for Azuki Elementals and the broader ecosystem?

Development is still ongoing with Azuki, and the Azuki Elementals reflect a further stepping stone towards more extensive plans for the future:

      ANIME token and AnimeChain

One of the most anticipated developments was the $ANIME token launch in January 2025. This token aims to create a decentralized, community-owned ecosystem for anime fans, providing utility and governance rights to holders. However, $ANIME faced struggles after high-profile launch, with mixed reception from the community.

Alongside the token, Azuki is developing AnimeChain, a custom Layer 3 blockchain in collaboration with Arbitrum. This blockchain infrastructure should support the anime ecosystem with cheap, fast transactions, potentially benefiting Elementals holders.

      Anime.com integration

The acquisition and development of Anime.com marks another important step in Azuki’s expansion.

This platform aims to become a central hub for anime fans worldwide, integrating with the Azuki ecosystem and potentially featuring digital assets like Animecoin, which could boost the value proposition for Elementals holders.

      Azuki Elementals - $ANIME Token

Enter the Garden anime anthology series

The release of an anime anthology series Enter the Garden, with collaborations from renowned anime creators, shows Azuki’s move into mainstream entertainment.

This series might incorporate elements and characters from the Elementals collection, potentially increasing their cultural relevance and value.

      Trading card game

Plans for an Azuki Trading Card Game, expected to drop by the end of 2025, could further integrate the NFT collections (including Elementals) into interactive experiences.

This game might provide extra utility for Elementals holders and create new ways to engage with the characters. The project may also look to join other innovative trading card games in the Web3 space that combine digital ownership with gameplay.

      Physical and digital collectibles

Azuki continues exploring the integration of physical and digital collectibles through Physical Backed Tokens (PBTs) and collaborations for exclusive merchandise.

Taking this approach could create tangible benefits for Elementals holders, bridging the gap between digital ownership and physical products.

      Azuki Elementals - Azuki TCG

      Exploring Azuki Elementals

Azuki Elementals reads as a well-defined chapter in the evolution of the Azuki universe.

While its launch definitely had some challenges and community pushback, the collection still remains central to an ambitious project with far-reaching plans.

For collectors and enthusiasts interested in Azuki Elementals, understanding the collection’s context, artistic vision, market dynamics, and potential future utility is going to stay relevant for years to come. As Azuki continues building toward its “Anime 2.0” vision, the role and value of the Elementals collection within its domain will likely develop in new and interesting ways.

For longtime Azuki holders, new collectors curious about Elementals, or those just interested in how NFT projects operate, the Azuki Elementals collection is a prime case study in how digital collectible projects can expand across tangible, exciting ways.
