It’s happening.
Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, have added the very first Web3 game to their store, Mythical Games‘ casual multiplayer game Blankos Block Party.
With over 1 million players to date, and landmark partnerships with Burberry, Atari and Monstercat to name a few, this exposes the lauded blockchain-powered title to the over 31 million active users of the Epic Games Store.
The free-to-play game is available to download and play in Early Access from the Epic Games Store right now, with the full release and Season One launch slated for September 28.
Jamie Jackson, Chief Creative Officer at Mythical Games, said;
“We’ve had a blast watching the Blankos community grow in size and creativity since our launch. On the eve of our full launch, we’re excited to welcome the Epic Games Store community to our vibrant player-base which has already created over one million accounts thus far.”
Opinion
This is it. This is where the adoption curve for blockchain-based games truly begins.
One of the biggest video game companies in the world has had the confidence to stand behind Web3 technology and promote one of its current flagship games, forging a new path ahead for the games industry in spite – something that Epic has a track-record of doing.
Negative NFT sentiment from the gaming community hasn’t phased Epic, who seem keen to change the narrative – and not just by supporting Blankos Block Party. A few months ago, Gala Games announced that Grit, an upcoming Wild West battle royale title, would also be coming to the Epic Games Store, so it’s clear that Epic is backing this new technology for the long haul.
This won’t change everything overnight. There’s still a long road ahead before NFTs become an accepted, ubiquitous part of the gaming landscape – but this is one small step for Epic Games, one giant leap for Web3.
