Popular metaverse platform Decentraland celebrated its 5th birthday on February 20, 2025 with a range of community giveaways, activities, and challenges.
The centrepiece of the celebrations was the Official 5th Birthday Party, held at Decentraland’s Orbit Stage by the development team. Other activities including giveaways of exclusive wearables, trivia challenges, social contests to win the ecosystem token $MANA, and many more.
In reaching its 5th birthday, Decentraland confirms its place as the longest-running metaverse platform in the Web3 ecosystem, pre-dating the launch of its biggest rival The Sandbox by almost two years.
What is Decentraland?
Decentraland is a multiplayer metaverse platform, built on Ethereum, and available on PC.
Released on February 20, 2020, players traverse a vibrant world where the land, activities and experiences around them are owned, built and maintained by the players themselves.
The game’s ecosystem token, $MANA, is central to the Decentraland experience. $MANA is used for in-game transactions – for purchasing land, cosmetics and more – and can be used to help build any manner of attractions, with creativity the only limiting factor. Decentraland includes games, galleries, digital houses and much more.
Although Decentraland has arguably fallen behind some of its more modern contemporaries – including the likes of The Sandbox, Otherside, Illuvium and more – its longevity as the longest-running metaverse platform to date makes it a noteworthy title in the history of the Web3 industry.
How are Decentraland celebrating their 5th birthday?
In celebration of their 5th birthday, the Decentraland team are hosting a number of activities to share the moment with the community.
The focal point of the celebrations is the Official 5th Birthday Party, held in Decentraland’s Orbit Plaza and hosted by the Decentraland team themselves.
Other noteworthy activities include:
- Free wearable giveaways. Any users that visit the Genesis Plaza can claim a free exclusive 5th birthday in-game wearable asset.
- DCL trivia challenge. Participants can test their knowledge of Decentraland to win other rare and exclusive wearables during the celebrations.
- Social contest. By tagging Decentraland on X and sharing your love of Decentraland, 5 participants will win 500 $MANA each.
- Community parties. On top of official events, the Decentraland team are encouraging the community to host their own events and gatherings to spread the celebratory mood.
