Delabs CEO Joonmo Kwon Discusses GDC, Polygon, and the Future of Blockchain Gaming
After a thrilling start to 2023, we catch up with Polygon’s Head of BD Korea to discuss Immutable, MapleStory Universe, and what lies ahead.
Polygon has had a stellar start to 2023; y00ts moved to the L2, a groundbreaking partnership with Immutable was struck, and Nexon’s announcement that MapleStory Universe would be built on the chain were just some of the highlights.
These have all helped to further establish Polygon as one of the leading chains, not just for blockchain gaming, but for web3 as a whole – but how does it all tie together, and where are they headed?
We caught up with Sungmo Park, Polygon’s Head of Business Development for Korea, to discuss their start to the year, and what we can look forward to across 2023 and beyond.
John: You?ve recently announced a partnership with Immutable. How will the two of you work together to supercharge blockchain gaming in 2023 and beyond?
Sungmo: An Immutable x Polygon Labs partnership solves the end-to-end blockchain gaming dilemma, and opens the door to more mainstream adoption. Immutable has all these different ways in which you can build on top of their stack, making it easy for games developers to focus on making games. Now that Polygon is unveiling our zero-knowledge tech stack – which is the future of blockchain scaling – it made a lot of sense for us to partner up.?
This is a positive move for both the gamers playing blockchain games, and the developers who can now more easily develop games.
What is it like to be working with Nexon on bringing MapleStory to web3?
The team at Nexon, the developers behind MapleStory Universe, are dedicated to deploying blockchain technology to their beloved IP in a way that makes the MMORPG experience even more enjoyable.
What else can we expect from Polygon in 2023?
We?re just getting started! Our goal is for Polygon to create the best tech available for developers and builders. Gaming, PFPs and DeFi are the three areas we’re hyper-focused on right now.
2021 was the year of building. 2022 was the year of alpha and beta releases. How will we look back on 2023 for blockchain gaming?
Years from now, when we look back at 2023, we?re going to remember how the launch of the Polygon zkEVM was a real game changer – one that allowed developers and studios to really accelerate adoption in the space.
Final Thoughts
For the past few years, mass adoption seemed like either a distant pipe dream, or a goal that came and went with the fluctuations of the market. With Polygon’s activity across 2022 and into 2023, it finally feels as though concrete, actionable steps have been taken to bring blockchain to the masses.
Reddit, Starbucks, MapleStory – these are the partnerships that really help to take web3 mainstream, and by joining forces with Immutable, the future of NFT-enhanced gaming is looking stronger than ever.
Wherever the future of gaming lies, you can count on Polygon to be there.
