EXCLUSIVE: Old Rock NFT on Comics, Coffee and Their Goliath PFP Mint
Ahead of their Goliath mint on February 19, we chat to the Old Rock team to discuss comic-led lore, great coffee, and a mystery contagion…
Puzzles, memes and wrestling references. What more could you need?
Despite being in the public eye for no more than two months, Old Rock have galvanised a community in a way that few other NFT projects have matched. With interactive storytelling, superb character-building, and a mastery of balancing mystique with transparency, they’ve become a real tour de force in NFT art.
With their Chapter 2: Goliath mint taking place this Sunday (February 19) at 23:00 UTC, I caught up with the team to chat about growth, utility, and what surprises lay ahead of us…
John: GM! Could you tell us a bit about yourselves, your backgrounds and how you got into the NFT space?
Old Rock: Gm!
Our core team consists of two people. The first is a compositor and VFX artist that runs a 3D animation studio, and who has worked with notable companies including Apple, McDonald’s, Lexus, Nissan, Nestle, and over 300 others in the span of 20 years. He became intrigued by NFTs due to his interest in AI and its growing visual and workflow applications.
The second has a background in various creative fields, including writing, video production, design, painting, and ceramics, as well as 10 years of experience in brand development. He became interested in NFTs after a friend introduced him to Journey to Godhood on WAX in early 2021. The possibilities for storytelling, community building and gaming in web3 captivated him, and he’s been here on the daily ever since.
The concept of Old Rock, and the high-quality art, have both been met with praise. Could you talk a bit about how the idea for the project came together, and the inspirations behind the art style of the NFTs?
When people ask us why we started Old Rock, we always get a little nostalgic.
It all started when we stumbled upon Old Rock Day as an actual holiday, and it just made us laugh. That moment of levity sparked my imagination, and I fell down a rabbit hole of possibilities. For the past 10 months, we’ve been hard at work on this project, exploring tokenomics and arranging visuals. As we worked, the idea took on a life of its own, growing in depth and grace.
What’s been truly amazing about the creative process is that it felt like we were discovering the story, rather than just writing it. There have been many moments of pure joy and epiphany during the creative process, and we knew it was something others would enjoy too. The journey has been a labor of love, and we’re excited to share our vision with the world like this.
Your first mint, Chapter 1: Old Rock, took place on January 7th, and has been a huge success, with 300 ETH in trading volume to date. Were you surprised by the reaction? What was the experience like for your team?
We were certainly surprised by the immediate response! It was a great experience for our team. All in all, we’re thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait to release more of the story.
Much of Old Rock is shrouded in mystery, with community intrigue, excitement, and speculation in equal measure. In Discord, you recently mentioned being on the verge of an incredible breakthrough. How’s that coming along?
Indeed, discovery is on the way! Maybe more than you’ve bargained for…
Your initial mint was accompanied by a digital comic, progressing the story of Old Rock. With AS locked in his lab, what can we expect in Chapter 2: Goliath?
In Chapter 2, the fictional society gives the name “Goliath” to the contagion. While we can’t give too much away, we can say that it’ll be an exciting journey. Readers who follow along will have the chance to explore the story deeper, with opportunities to uncover airdrops through solving puzzles and potentially access project-related alpha. Reading is encouraged…
Chapter 1 saw 500 rock NFTs minted. Chapter 2, minting this Sunday at 23:00 UTC, is set to go in a new direction. Could you tell us more?
The Goliath collection is composed of 5,000 NFTs – exactly 10 times the supply of Old Rock. While we can’t reveal the full utility of the Goliath NFTs just yet, we can say that there’s some details hidden within the accompanying comic that are waiting to be discovered.
Goliath is a PFP collection, with a three-tier mint:
- Rock Holders 0.008 ETH (max 2 per rock)
- Rocklist 0.010 ETH (max 3 per wallet)
- Public 0.015 ETH (max 5 per transaction)
Rock Holders can mint at each stage. Anyone who mints 8 or more NFTs from Goliath will receive a free airdrop of our “Chapter 1: Old Rock” burn-to-claim physical comic book NFT.
You’ve shared an image to Twitter of a piece of stamped clay, simply captioned “alpha”. Could you share any hints on what we can expect from Old Rock in future?
As a team of artists, we’re working on this project purely for the fun of it (isn’t that how all projects should be?), which leads us to use some of the royalties in unique and exciting ways that add value to Old Rock, even in small ways.
For example, we recently collaborated with Degen Coffee to offer all Old Rock holders a bag of high-quality, single-origin Ethiopian coffee. The stamped clay is linked to that collab…
Looking ahead to the future, we have something truly special in the works – you could call it a passion project at this point. Unfortunately, we can’t share too many details at this time, but we’ll be dropping hints through our media and comics over the next two months, so stay tuned!
In short, why should the Web3 community check out Old Rock, and get involved in your Chapter 2 mint?
Take a look at our story so far, try to solve some of our puzzles, and join the conversation in our community! We’re always glad to see new faces, whether you drop by this week or next year.
Old Rock’s trifecta of beautiful art, enciting lore and general mystique has its community hooked, and with their Goliath mint, the team is opening up their project to a much wider audience.
