On September 28, Gods Unchained – the competitive Web3 trading card game – announced two esports events to take place over the next few weeks, presented by AQUA.xyz, with a combined prize pool of $70,000 USD available, across USDC, $GODS and Gods Unchained packs.
Light’s Verdict: Showdown takes place on September 30th at 23:59 UTC, pitting 8 top Gods Unchained content creators against one another in a single-elimination tournament, with over $15,000 of prizes up for grabs.
Battle for the Light is scheduled for October 7-8, starting at 23:59 UTC both days, and gives players around the world the opportunity to take part in one of two regional tournaments for a prize pool of over $53,000.
Light’s Verdict: Showdown and the Day 2 Main Event of Battle for the Light will both be broadcast live via the Gods Unchained Twitch channel.
James Fletcher, Esports Manager at Gods Unchained, said:
“With Light’s Verdict: Showdown and Battle for the Light, we are embarking on that first step towards our long-standing promise to the Gods Unchained community. This is the first time that we’re able to bring global, esports-style tournaments to players, and we couldn’t be more excited.”
Registration for Battle for the Light is now open; for the Americas & Asia-Pacific region, and for EMEA and CIS.
Opinion
This isn’t Gods Unchained’s first foray into esports (they’ve been supporting various community-run tournaments over the past several months), but it is the first time they’re putting up such a significant prize pool – a strong statement of intent for the competitive potential they believe the game holds.
Large prize pools have a habit of not just luring talented players from similar games, but to also entice former Gods Unchained players back into the fold – and with a new card set available for a limited time, it’s a great time to do so.
It’s yet another sign of projects on Immutable X all pointing in a positive direction as of late. I’ve spoken about my love of esports before, so whilst I might get knocked out of Battle for the Light early, I’ll be sure to be watching along in Twitch chat!
