Immutable has announced that it will consolidate its two blockchain networks, Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM, into a single chain by the end of 2025 to simplify developers and user experience across its ecosystem.
The merged network will adopt the zkEVM architecture, a technology compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which allows developers to use existing Ethereum tools and smart contracts. Immutable X, the company’s original Layer-2 scaling solution, will be phased out in the process.
Immutable reports that the transition will not require any action from end users. The company will cover all gas costs associated with the migration, and users’ assets will be automatically transferred to the new chain.

What’s happening with Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM?
Immutable is merging its original network, Immutable X, with its newer chain, Immutable zkEVM. The zkEVM chain, launched in 2024, supports Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and tools. Immutable X, by contrast, was a custom Layer-2 solution built to scale NFT transactions on Ethereum.
According to Immutable, the combined chain will operate under the name “Immutable” and retain the zkEVM framework. The decision is intended to reduce complexity across the company’s infrastructure and standardise the development environment for games and applications built on the platform.
The zkEVM chain has already processed nearly 150 million transactions, according to figures provided by Immutable and has confirmed that core components of the network, including chain IDs, RPC endpoints, and wallet compatibility, will remain consistent following the merge.

What does this means for users and developers?
For most users, the migration will happen automatically and wallets such as Immutable Passport and MetaMask will display assets on the new chain without requiring configuration changes. The company has stated that it will handle the transfer of all supported tokens and cover associated network fees.
Users who prefer not to move to the merged chain will have an option to bridge their assets back to Ethereum before the transition is complete. Immutable also plans to introduce a new staking option on the zkEVM chain following the migration.
The migration will also affect developers currently using Immutable X APIs and infrastructure. According to Immutable, standard ERC20 and ERC721 tokens will be migrated automatically, whilst custom assets or contracts may require manual adjustments.
Games such as Guild of Guardians and Gods Unchained have already transitioned to the zkEVM chain, and other projects are expected to follow. Developers are being advised to update their integrations to zkEVM equivalents and switch over from Immutable X services such as Immutable Link and legacy RPC endpoints. A full documentation is provided to support these changes.
