Chunked, a Minecraft-style game developed by MSquared, has surpassed 20 million on-chain transactions as it continues to test the limits of fully decentralised gaming.
The game records every in-game action—such as mining, crafting, and player movement—directly onto the Somnia blockchain testnet. Unlike traditional online games that rely on central servers, Chunked operates entirely through smart contracts, making its data publicly accessible even without ongoing developer support.
The game is part of a broader series of experiments to assess how fully on-chain games might function at scale.

What is Chunked?
Chunked is a voxel-based game developed by MSquared, a division of the metaverse technology firm Improbable.
Players can mine, place, and craft blocks within a 3D environment, but unlike conventional games, the game runs without a central server. All gameplay logic and world data are stored within smart contracts on the Somnia blockchain testnet, and MSquared has stated that it plans to open-source these contracts.
According to MSquared CEO Rob Whitehead, the structure means that the game could continue independently, with the blockchain records remaining accessible for community-led development or modification.

What can we expect from the game?
Whilst Chunked draws clear inspiration from Minecraft, its technical structure is different.
Early reports suggest that gameplay is generally smooth, with minimal lag during basic activities such as mining and placing blocks. However, some issues have been identified, including occasional glitches where crafted items temporarily disappear, and a relatively small world size compared to larger sandbox games.
Chunked is part of a broader movement towards “autonomous worlds,” where games exist independently of a central authority. Earlier examples include Dark Forest, a blockchain-based space exploration game using zero-knowledge proofs, and the upcoming Eve Frontier from CCP Games.
Currently, Chunked remains in a testing phase, with MSquared describing it as a “tech demo.” The company plans to continue experimenting with other models for on-chain gaming ahead of Somnia’s anticipated mainnet launch later this year.
If successful, some prototypes developed during this period may evolve into larger commercial projects. MSquared has said it hopes Chunked will ultimately develop into a persistent, community-owned voxel world once Somnia becomes fully operational.
