Web3 game developers MOBOX have announced that web3 tower defence title Pancake Protectors will close at the end of October, following the conclusion of Seasons 37 and 38.
Until the closure of the game, players can continue to earn $CAKE rewards, with the final two seasons set to offer massive $CAKE prizes to players.
The game is set to be replaced by Dragon Defense – an updated title available on MOBOX’s DragonVerse Neo platform – with all players to receive a starter pack to get ahead in the new game.
Why is Pancake Protectors closing down?
After a recent evaluation of the game’s future, developers MOBOX have stated that the high maintenance and development costs of Pancake Protectors are unsustainable, thus have taken the difficult decision to close the game.
The community have expressed surprise over MOBOX’s decision to close the game, indicating possible financial issues. “While this wasn’t an easy decision, we believe now is the appropriate time to conclude this chapter and turn our attention toward new opportunities in the future,” MOBOX said in a statement.
This closure underscores the ongoing challenges facing the Web3 games industry, particularly around sustainability and acquiring a healthy player base.
What will happen when Pancake Protectors shuts down?
After Season 37 ends on October 31, all staking, market transactions, and $CAKE spending will be disabled. The remaining staked $CAKE will be returned to players. Season 38 will serve as a 7-day withdrawal period, allowing players to withdraw their $CAKE rewards before the game fully shuts down.
Additionally, all players will receive an exclusive starter pack for DragonVerse Neo, a new 3D open-world game by MOBOX. Dragon Defense, set to launch in November 2024, will replace Pancake Protectors and MOland Defense, offering similar tower defence gameplay with an enhanced set of features.
This closure is not isolated, as Shadow Realms, another PancakeSwap-branded web3 game, simultaneously announced its impending shutdown. Similar to Pancake Protectors, Shadow Realms will undergo a final season celebration followed by a withdrawal period.
