NFL Rivals, the officially-licensed NFL mobile game from web3 game studio Mythical Games, will release their “Year 2″ update on September 5, coinciding with the kick-off of the 2024/2025 NFL season.
Major updates are coming with the Year 2 update, including new PVP modes, up-to-date packs and an array of new features that allow fans to engage more closely with the real-world action of the NFL.
“We have a slate of activations, in and out of the game, to deepen our player engagement with the NFL Rivals brand and football season,” said John Linden, CEO of Mythical Games. “We want the player community to be integral to this game, meaning more engagement and interaction with our awesome players.”
What is NFL Rivals?
NFL Rivals is a mobile arcade football game. Players open packs, create an NFL team and take to the field, drawing up plays and executing your game plan to achieve victory. Season 1 of NFL Rivals saw the game score over 5 million downloads, with over 115 million virtual football games being played.
The game is free-to-play game, but players can also purchase NFT-based player cards. Utilising the Mythos Chain, and following the introduction of the NFL Rivals marketplace in August 2024, players can now directly trade players with each other to solidify their line-ups.
Mythical Games recently announced a deal with reigning Superbowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, including NFL Rivals branding in the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium, and the designation of “Official Mobile Game of the Kansas City Chiefs” for the title.
NFL Rivals is the sole officially-licensed Web3 game for the NFL, after the closure of DraftKings Reignmakers in July 2024, and subsequent lawsuit filed by the NFLPA.
What is coming in NFL Rivals Year 2?
A host of new features are set to arrive in NFL Rivals Year 2, including a new multiplayer mode, an expanded synergy system, plus the Road to the Playoffs and season-long Reward Road.
“[The] highly anticipated PvP mode should be the biggest upgrade to NFL Rivals since the marketplace went live, and it’s the one we know our players are most excited about,” noted Linden.
Ahead of Year 2, trading of NFL Rivals players has increased significantly – growing from a few hundred trades per day this time last year to over 8,000 per day in the past week.
According to Linden, 20% of NFL Rivals players “have upgraded their game-supplied wallet to a proper web3 wallet… which points to a very bright future for NFL Rivals and web3 gaming at large.”
