The first open alpha playtest for Riftstorm, an upcoming web3-powered co-op looter shooter, is now live on PC game distribution platform Steam.
This playtest represents the first time many players will be able to explore Riftstorm’s core ARPG-esque roguelite gameplay – but nevertheless includes a bunch of new content, including exclusive skins and rewards, updated gameplay mechanics, and the introduction of new characters.
The game is currently free to play – although its Web3 features are yet to be included – with the playtest set to conclude on October 30.

What is Riftstorm?
Riftstorm is an action RPG and co-op roguelite set in the mysterious world of Occultical.
Players take on the role of Mythic Protocol Weavers – agents tasked with protecting the world from mythic threats – with parties of up to three taking part in fast-paced, isometric combat with distinct weapons and abilities.
The game features a wide array of characters, skins, combat styles and more, with players encouraged to experiment with their loadouts and find a build that suits their playstyle.

What’s new in the Alpha playtest?
This inaugural alpha playtest introduces two new Weavers: Rook, a versatile fighter with a range of stun abilities, and Thistle, a spellcaster who excels at area-of-effect abilities. With these additions, there are now six Weavers for players to choose.
Riftstorm‘s Dungeon system has also been overhauled, with the alpha featuring larger and more detailed maps, plus the addition of a larger pool of mission types, making the gameplay loop less repetitive and more engaging.
The alpha also sees the introduction of the Weapon Loop 0.5 crafting system. This allows players to dismantle weapons for materials, which can be used to craft new weapons using Scrap.

What do I get for completing the Alpha playtest content?
By completing the mission arc that’s available in the alpha playtest, players unlock a variety of exclusive skins and other in-game rewards.
It is unclear if these rewards will become NFTs at a later stage – though Riftstorm is connected to Confiction Labs’ broader entertainment platform, the Portal, which offers additional rewards and content connected to the game’s universe.
Although Riftstorm does not include any blockchain features at this stage, the developers have revealed future plans to utilise web3 technology in tracking player decisions and enabling digital asset ownership – with players given the option to turn items into NFTs or revert them back into usable in-game items.
