Web3 gaming blockchain Ronin have announced the upcoming introduction of Polygon-based Layer-2 zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (zkEVM) blockchains to its infrastructure, allowing developers to build their own specific Layer-2 chains on the Ronin mainnet using Polygon‘s Chain Development Kit (CDK).
This will allow game developers to build applications that can scale more easily without affecting the main Ronin network, and will also simplify cross-chain interactions and allow players to more seamlessly engage with games built on Ronin.
The first Ronin zkEVM chains are scheduled to launch in Q1 2025.
What is a zkEVM?
A zkEVM, or a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine, is a type of blockchain that can process smart contracts in a manner compatible with both zero-knowledge-proof computations and existing Ethereum infrastructure.
The technology enhances blockchain scalability and privacy by allowing transactions to be processed without revealing underlying data, which could be used to identify transaction participants.
Zero-knowledge methods also reduce the blockspace required for transactions, allowing the blockchain to process transactions more efficiently, and therefore making asset transfers, tokens swaps and smart contract interactions faster and less expensive.
Why is this significant for Ronin?
Ronin has exploded in popularity over the past year, thanks in large part to popular games such as Pixels. With 1.5 million daily active users at the time of writing, around 40 million transactions are processed each day – and whilst the Ronin network is capable of handling that volume, it leaves little room for growth.
The integration of Polygon-based Layer-2 Ronin zkEVM chains will substantially boost Ronin’s transaction capacity, giving the network substantially more headroom and allowing it to support far more users, with a theoretical daily transaction count in the billions.
With a CDK at the ready, and zkEVM technology already proving popular with web3 game developers, the community at large is anticipating more big games to arrive on Ronin in the coming weeks and months.
