Anime-style RPG Variance has officially integrated with the Somnia blockchain network, marking a shift in the game’s technical infrastructure as it prepares for a major public playtest in early July.
Developed by Realm Studios, Variance is moving to Somnia to support new platform features, including multiplayer, mobile, and console versions of the game. The decision was made after discussions between Realm Studios and Somnia’s founder, with performance, scalability, and blockchain integration cited as key factors.
With the migration complete, the team behind Variance is now launching a series of events and updates in the lead-up to July’s playtest. These include online Game Nights, early access sessions, and a new gameplay mechanic involving collectible “Tickets.”

What is Variance?
Variance is a roguelite role-playing game with anime-style visuals and action-based gameplay. Players control characters called “Variants,” each with unique skills, as they navigate procedurally generated levels. The game focuses on reflex-based combat, with no pay-to-win mechanics.
Originally launched in pre-alpha in 2024, the game has seen multiple development waves. Previous updates have included new levels, balance changes, and blockchain-enabled features such as NFT items and the $VOID token.
The development team includes contributors with experience from projects such as Pokémon GO, Axie Infinity, and the wider Realm metaverse.

What can we expect from this partnership?
The move to Somnia enables the game to scale in ways that were not previously possible on its former infrastructure. According to Realm Studios, this infrastructure is necessary to support upcoming features such as online multiplayer and mobile/console builds.
The partnership also comes with community initiatives designed to familiarise players with the new build. Game Nights are being hosted throughout June on both the Somnia and Variance Discord servers, offering hands-on demos and in-game rewards. A “Somnia Quest” campaign, which encourages social activity, runs through June 14.
Tickets—a new in-game item—can be earned or purchased and will be required for a limited-time event planned for later in July. Holders of the Genesis Portal NFT will automatically receive one Ticket per portal.

What’s next for the game?
A public playtest is scheduled for early July, marking the first time Variance is available on the Somnia network. This session will allow players to test the latest build, including any new performance and feature enhancements made possible through the network integration.
A separate, undisclosed event is also planned for later in July. Whilst full details have not been released, participation will require Tickets earned through prior events or gameplay.
The developers have not confirmed whether the game will undergo additional changes following the playtest but have indicated that more platform support and content updates are expected in the coming months.
