Piers Kicks, Founding Partner at Delphi Ventures, has revealed that Gunzilla Games – developers of soon-to-release Web3 battle royale title Off The Grid – now represent their biggest investment to date.
Although the exact figure has not been revealed, Piers noted that after 5 years of development and “almost $100M” invested into Off The Grid in total, the 340 employee team will be releasing the title on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S “within 30 days”.
This would mark the first major blockchain-based title to see a concurrent PC and console release – a landmark moment for both blockchain gaming and Web3 history.
What is Off The Grid?
Off The Grid is a free-to-play third-person shooter, set in a dystopian cyberpunk future, that will be available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Developed by Gunzilla Games – and with the noted involvement of Hollywood director Neill Blomkamp – the game features two distinct modes; a 150-player battle royale PvP mode, and a narrative-driven story mode which lasts a reported 60 hours.
Thanks to its significant backing and use of mainstream gaming influencers, Off The Grid will be one of the most high-profile blockchain games to release to date – and the first to see a major next-gen console launch.
When will Off The Grid be released?
In Piers Kicks blog post today, he states that Off The Grid will release on both PC and console “within 30 days”, so we can assume that Off The Grid will be released by October 25, 2024 at the latest.
The blockchain element of the game is reportedly “optional”. Players will be able to craft, customize, and trade in-game items – which are likely to be NFTs – via a blockchain-based in-game marketplace.
With a multi-platform free-to-play release, Off The Grid will be competing directly against mainstream battle royale titles, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone. Will it be able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these gaming titans? We won’t have long to wait to find out.
