Web3 battle royale game ‘Off the Grid’ has officially entered early access, giving players the opportunity to try it out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store.
Developed by Gunzilla Games, the title brings blockchain elements into the battle royale genre, offering a glimpse into its innovative gameplay and economy.
Although the full features aren’t yet available, players can explore its mechanics and blockchain integration in this initial release.
What is Off the Grid?
Off the Grid is a futuristic battle royale game where players compete in a large-scale city map, with the objective of surviving against rival squads.
Whilst it shares certain elements with popular games like Apex Legends and Fortnite, it introduces a fresh mechanic—allowing players to use and switch out robotic limbs during matches to gain tactical advantages.
Additionally, the game distinguishes itself through its heavy focus on storytelling, with over 60 hours of narrative content in development, guided by co-founder Neill Blomkamp, known for his work on films like District 9.
What’s available in early access?
The early access version offers a 60-player mode called “Extraction Royale,” in which teams of three battle against each other in a large city setting.
Players can earn GUN tokens by completing in-game objectives, though the full implementation of the blockchain economy is not yet in place. Once fully developed, GUN tokens—built on Gunzilla’s Avalanche subnet—will enable players to mint and trade NFT-based items, such as weapons and equipment.
Whilst the full blockchain features remain in progress, early access provides a first look at the gameplay, with more functionality expected in later updates.
What’s next for Off the Grid?
As development continues, Off the Grid will expand its content offerings, adding new game modes, maps, and a fully functional blockchain economy powered by the GUN token on Avalanche’s mainnet.
Whilst blockchain integration on consoles is still evolving, future updates will offer more clarity on how these features will work on platforms like PlayStation and Xbox.
For now, the gaming community is closely eyeing the game’s progress as it blends battle royale gameplay with blockchain technology following its recent promotional stream from major streamers including Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Seth “Scump” Abner and Tim “TimTheTatman” Betar.
